Providing a wide range of diagnostic testing that physicians rely on to properly diagnose and treat patients.

Skilled phlebotomists are available to draw blood samples from patients both in the hospital setting, and in an outpatient setting at our various patient service centers throughout the region. The primary goal of Hartford HealthCare laboratories is to provide each of our patients with excellent customer service each time they visit one of our facilities.

Hartford HealthCare boasts state-of-the-art facilities that use the latest in automation and technology. The menu of tests performed in the laboratory has been greatly expanded, thus providing better service to our patients and physicians. Each of our staff undergoes continuous training to provide quality customer service to our patients. We ask our patients for their feedback so that we can make improvements as needed, and we are constantly looking for ways to enhance our service at each location.

Our laboratories are staffed by a group of physicians with subspecialty expertise including the following services:

Transfusion Medicine

Blood Banks provide blood components and performs laboratory testing, including countless compatibility tests each year, as well as blood typing, preparing fresh frozen plasma, and DAT's on umbilical cord blood. The quality of a blood bank can be no better than the quality of its staff.

Hematology 

The Hematology department is composed of three primary areas of testing: Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis, and two sub-specialty areas: Special Coagulation and Immunology. The study of hematology is a crucial aid in diagnosing blood disorders, and monitoring disease treatments.

Chemistry

The Clinical Chemistry Department generates countless tests results per year. The majority of these tests are performed on the latest available, state-of-the-art analyzers. 

Microbiology

Microbiology is a continuously changing field as organisms become more resistant to antibiotics and new technologies are implemented to give faster, more accurate results. Services provided include gram stain and bacterial culture, fungal culture, rapid testing for Influenza and RSV, limited Mycobacterial testing, Ova and Parasite detection in stool, various Rapid Antigen testing, and Clostridium difficile toxin assays.

Point of Care Testing

Point of Care Testing POCT – a term used to describe laboratory testing performed at or near the patient site, usually by non-laboratory employees (e.g., nurses, respiratory therapists, PCT’s). The central criterion of POCT is that it does not require permanent dedicated space. Examples include kits and instruments that are hand carried or otherwise transported to the vicinity of the patient for immediate testing at that site.

Quality Assurance Department

Hartford HealthCare laboratories have documented quality management program that systematically ensures the quality of all laboratory services. The laboratory quality management program is fully integrated with the hospitals institutional program.

Anatomic Pathology

The Histology and Cytology Laboratories in the Hartford HealthCare system utilize state-of-the-art equipment to provide the highest quality Anatomic Pathology services.

Acute Care Locations:

	Charlotte Hungerford Hospital The CHH Laboratory and Blood testing labs perform over 400,000 tests annually. Testing is performed in our state-of-the-art laboratory by certified medical technologists.
	Hartford Hospital Hartford Hospital is an 867-bed Level 1 Trauma Center & regional referral center that provides high-quality care in all clinical disciplines. It is one of the largest teaching hospitals and tertiary care centers in New England.
	The Hospital of Central Connecticut The Hospital of Central Connecticut (THOCC) is a 414-bed, 32-bassinet, acute-care community teaching hospital with campuses in New Britain and Southington.
