Hartford Hospital Launches “Take the Time” Mobile Mammography Van
November 17, 2025
Hartford Hospital is rolling out its new “Take the Time” 3D Mobile Mammography Van, bringing advanced breast cancer screening straight to communities across Connecticut.
The mobile unit delivers high-quality, hospital-grade care — complete with 3D scanners for precise detection — all within a state-of-the-art space designed for comfort and privacy.
The goal of the van is to make screening more accessible, promote early detection, and advance health equity for women everywhere.
“Many factors limit access to testing — hours, insurance, language, transportation, and trust,” says Andy Salner, MD, medical director of the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute.
The van will partner with community groups, churches, and local businesses, setting up in neighborhoods across Hartford and beyond. Each visit includes patient navigators who help women schedule follow-ups, access financial support and feel confident throughout their care journey.
Hartford Hospital launched its first mobile mammography program in 2004 with a small minivan. Since then, it has completed more than 30,000 mammograms and helped diagnose hundreds of early-stage cancers.
“Our patients are at the center of everything we do. This new van will bring care to thousands of underserved women every year,” says Cheryl Ficara, RN, MS, president of Hartford Hospital and senior vice president of Hartford HealthCare. “Providing enhanced access, for free, where and when it’s convenient, are critical steps in ensuring our community members receive the best care close to home — when they need it most. I am incredibly proud of this new van and the colleagues who support it.”
Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women — but early detection saves lives.
