Drawing on a degree in architectural design, certification in green garden design and experience in urban planning and construction, Steve McKenzie launched his own company to share and expand his knowledge.

He was particularly interested in engaging minorities and those living in urban areas.

“I realize that the people in my community were not pervious to the information and business industry that I knew and have experience with,” he says. “By starting Kafa, I knew I would be able to bring awareness in teaching and hiring both younger and older generations to give them the experience to create economic empowerment.”

Kafa began working with Hartford HealthCare in 2022 on such projects as building maintenance work at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and at Hartford Healthcare Medical Group sites in the Fairfield Region. The connection, McKenzie says, is an opportunity he has worked toward for years.

“It was important for me to build and unfold awareness of the firm, its experience and professionalism. Collaborations with smaller businesses helps us take advantage of the opportunities, diversity and inclusion Hartford HealthCare stands for,” McKenzie notes.
