The potential of artificial intelligence to boost the delivery, access and cost of healthcare drew local, national and international news outlets to Hartford HealthCare’s unveiling of its new Center for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, the first of its kind in New England and one of just a few in the country.
“We have put together all the pieces at Hartford HealthCare so we can double down on unlocking the transformative power of AI for our patients in a trustworthy and safe way,” said Barry Stein, MD, the system’s chief clinical innovation officer, on WFSB Hartford HealthCare launches AI center (wfsb.com).
Audrey Silver, nurse manager of the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department, uses AI to schedule her nurses. Using algorithms, AI analyzes data on patient trends and the scheduling preferences of the nurses to create a schedule. The task of creating a six-week schedule dropped from 88 hours for her team to about 10.
“We had to look at our 175 nurses of all different levels of experience and ensure that we had a balanced schedule with the right type of nurse, with the right type of training for each special area of the department each day,” Silver told CT Insider Hartford HealthCare launches center to use AI in hospitals (ctinsider.com). “It was all done manually so you can imagine there was a lot of human error there.”
