2 Years of COVID: These Interactive Graphics Tell the Story

March 04, 2022

COVID-19 is too unpredictable, too cunning, for us to consider March 12 as anything more than the novel coronavirus’ second anniversary. It’s not the end, despite the dwindling case and death numbers.

But in this pause we can at least reflect on the cumulative damage:

  • More than 10,500 deaths in Connecticut.
  • More than 960,000 deaths in the United States.
  • 6 million deaths worldwide.

In Connecticut, with close to 730,000 COVID-positive cases and close to 15.3 million reported tests, the numbers seem almost incomprehensible.

“You all remember back in March of 2020,” says Dr. Ulysses Wu, Hartford HealthCare’s System Director of Infection Disease and Chief Epidemiologist. “Going out on the roads was actually glorious because there was nobody out there. Everybody was afraid to go out. You couldn’t go into a restaurant. You couldn’t go into a grocery store. . . . Last year, we were losing the equivalent of a 9/11 every single day, upward of over 3,000 people a day in the United States. There were people who weren’t batting an eye to it. It is a matter of perspective.”

If the numbers don’t seem real, they at least offer some context.
