The Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship at the Ayer Neuroscience Institute at Hartford Hospital is a two-year program that provides the unique opportunity to develop clinical and procedural skills in the neurointerventional suite within one of New England’s busiest stroke centers.
During this program, fellows receive comprehensive training in both the diagnostic and treatment realms of care. Technical expertise is accomplished from the large volume of procedures coinciding with clinical application in the management of this patient group.
The fellowship is led by co-directors Dr. Martin Ollenschleger and Dr. Inam Kureshi, with a dedicated faculty of neurointerventionalists, neurosurgeons, stroke neurologists and neuroradiologists.
Program Highlights
The Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship consists of both didactic and clinical training at an 800-bed, tertiary referral care center. With over 750 endovascular and open cerebrovascular procedures performed annually, the Stroke Center at Hartford Hospital acts as a major referral center for endovascular and neurosurgical services from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and eastern New York.
Hartford Hospital is New England’s first Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level 1 trauma center, both served by two medical helicopters.
Besides diagnostic cerebral and spinal angiograms, a broad range of procedures are performed regularly at Hartford Hospital, including embolization of brain aneurysms, using coil embolization or flow diversion techniques, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas, and CNS/head and neck neoplasms. Endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke is performed on a high volume basis.
Fellows also have the opportunity to become well versed in interventional spine procedures, including percutaneous biopsy and vertebral augmentation.
Procedures are performed in modern flat-panel biplane neurointerventional suites, offering state-of-the-art 3-dimensional angiography and many advanced imaging and procedural guidance applications.
Participation in clinical research by fellows is encouraged with two dedicated research rotations provided during the course of the two-year fellowship.
